Express, Deluxe or Ultimate: What Each Step at Marina Express Actually Does

Marina Express Car Wash in Stockton sells three wash packages, and each one is built on the one below it. The Express Wash is the base. The Deluxe Wash is the Express plus more, and the Ultimate Wash is the Deluxe plus more. Nothing gets swapped out as you move up, so the choice comes down to which extra steps your car needs this week. Here is what each step does, in plain terms, so you can pick without guessing.

The Express Wash, $14

The Express Wash covers a pre-soak, a soft scrub wash, a clear coat protectant, a spot free rinse and a dry. The order matters. Most of what sits on a car is fine grit stuck in a film of road grime, and dragging a brush across grit that hasn't been loosened is how small scratches start. The pre-soak goes on first so the soft scrub is lifting dirt off the paint instead of grinding it around.

The clear coat protectant is what makes the Express more than a rinse. Modern paint is a coloured layer with a clear coat on top, and the clear coat takes the sun, the dust and whatever the birds leave behind. A protectant adds a thin layer over that, so water runs off more easily and dirt has less to cling to. The spot free rinse and the dry finish the job. If your car was washed a couple of weeks ago and only wears the usual Central Valley dust, the Express is often all it needs.

The Deluxe Wash, $16

The Deluxe adds four things to everything in the Express: hot wax, triple foam, an under car wash and a tire and wheel cleaner. Each one covers ground the Express doesn't.

  • The under car wash reaches the underside of the car, where mud and road grime collect out of sight. It earns its keep if you drive dirt roads, park near a job site or take the truck down a farm lane.
  • The tire and wheel cleaner goes after brake dust and road film on the wheels, which body soap isn't really aimed at. Wheels get the dirtiest, and most people notice them last.
  • Hot wax is a coating that helps water sheet off the paint and adds a little gloss between proper waxing sessions at home or at a detailer.
  • Triple foam is the thick, coloured foam that rolls across the car. It is one more soaping pass before the rinse, and it is a big part of why a tunnel wash is fun to sit through.

The Ultimate Wash, $18

The Ultimate holds everything in the Deluxe and adds a lava bath, a sun shield protectant and tire shine. The lava bath is the Ultimate's signature step, and it is the one to ask an attendant about if you're curious how it looks from inside the tunnel. The sun shield protectant is aimed at the thing that ages paint fastest around here, which is long days of direct sun. Tire shine is the finishing touch: dark, glossy sidewalls so the whole car looks finished instead of half done. If your car lives outside in the Stockton sun, the Ultimate is the package that speaks to that most directly.

Add ceramic for $3

The Deluxe and Ultimate cards both carry a ceramic add-on for $3. A ceramic add-on is a top coat applied as part of the wash. It is not the same thing as a professionally applied ceramic coating, which is a separate job done on carefully prepared paint. What a quick add-on can do is make the surface slicker, so water beads and rolls away and dust has a harder time sticking. For three dollars it is an easy upgrade to try once and judge by how your car looks a week later.

How to choose

Each step up costs $2: Express to Deluxe, then Deluxe to Ultimate. Because the gap is small, the decision is less about budget and more about what your car has been through. Use the Express for a quick refresh when the car is mostly dusty. Move to the Deluxe after a muddy week, a long drive or a stretch of parking under trees. Choose the Ultimate when the sun is at its worst, or when you want the tire shine and the full finish.

Hold the same logic for the family truck and the commuter sedan. The truck probably wants the under car wash more often. The sedan that sits in a work parking lot all day probably wants the sun shield protectant. Neither answer is wrong, and you can switch packages from one visit to the next.

If you wash often, run the numbers on the Unlimited Club too, because the monthly price for each package pays for itself in a few visits. Marina Express is at 2908 W Benjamin Holt Dr in Stockton, next to the Arco, open Monday to Sunday from 7:30am to 7:30pm, weather permitting. Pull in and pick the package that fits the week.
