Is the Unlimited Club Worth It? The Math at Marina Express

A monthly car wash membership only makes sense if you actually use it. At Marina Express Car Wash in Stockton the numbers are simple enough to work out on a napkin, and the break-even point is low. This is the arithmetic using the current prices, plus what to know about billing, plates and cancelling before you sign up.

The prices side by side

Marina Express runs its monthly plan as the Unlimited Club, which the wash also calls the Yacht Club. There is a membership level for each wash package, so you pick the package you want and pay the monthly price for it.

  • Express Wash: $14 for a single wash, $22.99 a month in the Club
  • Deluxe Wash: $16 for a single wash, $29.99 a month in the Club
  • Ultimate Wash: $18 for a single wash, $39.99 a month in the Club

Where it breaks even

Start with the Express. Two single washes cost $28, which is already more than the $22.99 membership, so the second visit in a month is where the Club pulls ahead. The Deluxe works the same way: two single washes are $32 against $29.99. The Ultimate needs one more trip. Two Ultimate washes come to $36, still short of $39.99, and the third visit, $54 in single washes, puts the membership clearly ahead. In short, two visits a month for the Express or Deluxe and three for the Ultimate.

Past the break-even point, each extra wash lowers your average cost. Go four times in a month and the Express works out to about $5.75 a wash, the Deluxe about $7.50 and the Ultimate about $10. Four single washes would have cost $56, $64 and $72, so the Club saves roughly $33, $34 and $32 over the month.

Who it suits

Central Valley driving makes frequent washing easy to justify. Dust settles fast, summer sun bakes it on, and winter fog and rain leave a film behind. If you commute, park outside, or drive a dark car that shows every speck, twice a month is a low bar. A membership also takes the price out of the decision. If the car is dusty at lunchtime and the wash is on your way, you just go.

It does not suit someone who washes once a month or less. A single Express at $14 beats a $22.99 membership if you only come by once. Count how many times you washed the car last month. If the answer is two or more on the Express or Deluxe, or three or more on the Ultimate, the Club is the cheaper way to do it. If the answer is zero or one, pay by the wash and revisit the question when the summer dust arrives.

How the plan works day to day

  • Sign up online or at the wash. You can handle it from your phone, or talk to an attendant when you're there.
  • You're billed on the anniversary date of when you signed up. Join on the 12th and the 12th is your billing day.
  • Entry runs on a license plate reader, so the wash recognizes your car as a member.
  • New plate or new car? Change your plate information online under manage membership, or talk to an employee at the wash.
  • To cancel, do it online or at the wash. Once you cancel, you're no longer billed.

That last point is the one people worry about most, and the answer is short. There is no phone tree and no letter to mail. You can cancel the same way you joined, online or in person, and billing stops.

More than one car at home

Marina Express offers Family Plans for households with more than one vehicle. Each additional plan is $5 off, and all the plans have to be on the same credit card. Two Express memberships come to $22.99 plus $17.99, or $40.98 a month. Three Deluxe memberships come to $29.99 plus $24.99 plus $24.99, or $79.97 a month. If one of you drives a daily commuter and another drives a truck that ends up on dirt roads, the two memberships don't have to be the same package.

Other ways to save

First responders, active military and veterans get 10% off any wash at Marina Express. Stop by the wash and speak to an attendant for your code. Gift cards are sold online or at the wash, which makes a decent present for a friend with a dusty truck.

The Unlimited Club page has the details for each plan, and you can pick the package after reading what each one adds in the Express, Deluxe and Ultimate breakdown. Marina Express is at 2908 W Benjamin Holt Dr in Stockton, open 7:30am to 7:30pm Monday to Sunday, weather permitting. The owners are on site, so questions about a plan can be answered face to face.
